Change of farm irrigation method must to reduce cost

Speakers in an institutional meeting here yesterday observed more efficiency in irrigation has become a necessity for reducing the misuse of water alongside decreasing agriculture production cost in the region, particularly in vast Barind tract.
They observed that the existing irrigation method has increased misuse of water adding pressure on both ground and surface water posing a serious threat to ecology.
The observations came at a review meeting of Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) activities held at its conference hall in Rajshahi city.
Two members of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Agriculture, Abdul Mannan, MP, and Nurul Islam Omor, MP, and Joint Secretary of the ministry of agriculture Hemayet Hossain addressed the meeting as guests of honour with Engineer Abdur Rashid, Executive Director of BMDA, in the chair.
The meeting reviewed all activities and progress of BMDA projects elaborately and took some important decisions in this regard, the meeting sources said.
Lawmaker Abdul Mannan said the present government has attained remarkable success in agriculture sector and urged the BMDA officials and others concerned to put in their collective efforts to uphold the success in the days ahead.
He said there was no need of importing rice in last five years as we had adequate production to feed the nation. “Now we have started exporting rice”. Role of agriculture sector is very vital towards making the country’s economy functional alongside ensuring food security. He called upon the field level officials to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty.
He mentioned that the government has attached highest priority to the agriculture sector and added that the field level officials and researchers should take the responsibilities of reaching the government’s services to the farmers’ doorsteps.
In the meeting, Engineer Abdur Rashid, Executive Director of BMDA, painted an overview of its ongoing projects and progress of those. He said the region scored significant progress in the crop production sector following the expansion of irrigation facilities along with supplying water from the re-excavated canals and ponds.
