RU Correspondent :The students of Rajshahi University (RU) call for a student gathering on Sunday on campus with three-point demands including the withdrawal of cases against the agitators followed by the February 2 violence as the cases are yet to withdraw even after one year. The other demands include the cancellation of ongoing commercial evening master’s courses at the faculty of law, business and social science and the fresh investigation and trial of the February 2 violence. They raised their demands at a press conference under the banner of “Teachers-students against hiked fees and commercial evening courses” held at the university cafeteria at 12:00pm.On February 2, 2014, over hundred students and eight journalists were injured when some armed Bangladesh Chhatra League men backed by police attacked them who were demonstrating against a fee hike and evening master’s courses programme on campus. On the contrary, the following day, the university authorities, police and BCL filed six cases with Motihar police accusing more than 750 general students. After assuring of again and again the university authorities are yet to withdraw the cases, however, the authorities are trying the cases as the weapon of stopping the student’s voice”, Jarif Muhib Ayan, one of the victims and a student of English department alleged.Whenever we wanted to hold any programme on campus over students related issues, the authorities threatened us of arrest, he also alleged.Students at a press conference also threatened of tougher movement if the authorities do not pay heed on their demands as soon as possible.Declaring February 2 as “Commercialisation of Education Prevention Day”, the students urged the students of all the institutions of the country and abroad to observe the day.To observe the day, RU students will bring out a procession on campus and join at a gathering in front of the university central library at 11:00am.
