The BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case will be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal soon for its speedy disposal.
Judge of the Metropolitan Session Judges Court of Dhaka KM Emrul Kayesh said this on Thursday in the court.
Though yesterday was scheduled for the charge framing hearing, the court did not pass any order about charge framing.
He said, “The case will be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal. That is why there are some formalities. After the formalities, the government will publish a gazette in this regard and then a order will be passed to transfer the case.”
Then the court fixed February 17 for starting charge framing hearing against 25 BUET students in Abrar Fahad murder case.
Some of the accused filed bail petitions in the case yesterday. The court said that the bail petitions would be disposed of in the Speedy Trial Tribunal when the case would be transferred in it.
Abrar Fahad, a second year-student of the university’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, was beaten to death allegedly by some BCL leaders between 10.00 pm on October 6 and 2:00 am on October 7 in 2019.
The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to the social media to demand justice for Abrar.
Law enforcers suspect that Abrar was attacked because of one of his recent Facebook posts, which seemed critical of some latest deals with India.
Later, Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a murder case against 19 with the Chawkbazar Police Station.
On November 13, 2019, Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police submitted the charge sheet in murder case accusing 25 students of BUET, most of whom are reportedly BCL men.
Investigation Officer of the case, Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman, submitted the charge sheet in the general register office of the chief metropolitan magistrate court of Dhaka.
“Among the 25 accused, 19 are FIR named. 21 accused have been arrested in the meantime,” said Monirul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on that day in a press briefing.
He also said, “11 accused students were directly involved with the murder of Abar. The remaining 14 accused were involved in different ways in the killing. So far 35 persons have been testified in the case.”
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Kaiserrul Islam on November 18, 2019, accepted the charge sheet and issued arrest warrant against four fugitive accused as the investigation officer showed them absconding in the charge sheet. Later one of the absconded accused surrendered in the court.
On January 13, 2020, the case was transferred to Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judges’ Court from Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate for its trial. On January 21, 2020, Judge of the Metropolitan Session Judges Court took the charge into cognizance and fixed January 30 for charge framing hearing. And on Thursday the court fixed a new date.
