The rate of disposal of cases in the subordinate courts across the country has increased by 32.40 per cent, according to a report of the Supreme Court administration.
In the first six months, from January to June this year, the disposal rate of the cases was average 91.90 per cent. However, period of the last year, the average disposal during the corresponding rate of the cases was 59.50 per cent.
According to the report, a total of 0.74 million civil and criminal cases were filed in the subordinate courts from January 1 to June 30 this year. During this time, 0.68 million cases were settled in the subordinate courts.
On the other hand, a total of 0.65 million civil and criminal cases were filed in the subordinate courts in the first six months of last year, and total 0.39 million cases were disposed of during the same period.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on January 2 in 2022, the first working day after taking the charge as the Chief Justice, said, a monitoring cell headed by a judge of the High Court Division will be formed for each of the eight divisions of the country in order to resolve case backlog in all lower courts and bring transparency in the judicial process.
Progress reports will be taken from each of them every month, also said the Chief Justice adding that older cases will be supervised and monitored with utmost importance for early disposing of them. He, 25 days after taking the office, gave the responsibility of the eight divisions to the eight judges of the High Court Division on January 27.
Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam was given the charge of the subordinate courts of Dhaka division, Justice Md Jahangir Hossain was given the charge of the courts of Khulna division, Justice Zafar Ahmed was given the charge of Barishal division and Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah was given the charge of the Chattogram division.
Justice S M Kuddus Zaman was appointed to monitor the proceedings in Sylhet division, Justice Shahed Nuruddin was given the charge of Rangpur division, Justice Md Zakir Hossain was given the charge of the Mymensingh division and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman was given the charge of the Rajshahi division.
The report of the Supreme Court administration included the activities of the eight monitoring committees, number and comparative statistics of the cases filed and disposed of since January 1 to June 30 of this year and also from January 1 to June 30 of last year.
A total of 0.26 million cases were filed in the subordinate courts of Dhaka division since January 1 to June 30 of this year. During the same period, 84,759 cases were filed in Khulna division, 44,656 cases were filed in Barishal division, 0.13 million cases were filed in Chattogram division, 39,197 cases were filed in Sylhet division, 53,673 cases were filed in Rangpur division, 47,904 cases were filed in Mymensingh division and 83,153 cases were filed in Rajshahi division. Total 0.74 million cases were filed in eight divisions.
During this time a total of 0.22 million cases were disposed of in the courts of the Dhaka division, 74,694 cases were disposed of in Khulna division, 40,911 cases were disposed of in Barishal division, 0.12 million cases were settled in Chattorgram division, 37,473 cases were settled in Sylhet division, 52,846 cases were settled in Rangpur division, 51,811 cases were settled in Mymensingh division and 73,683 cases were setteled in Rajshahi division.
In these 6 months, the average case settlement rate is 91.90 per cent. The percentage was 59.50 in last year.
