Capacity-building for strengthening village courts stressed

Speakers at a training course have stressed for enhancing capacities of all stakeholders including public representatives in strengthening the village courts to ensure justice at the grassroots.
The village courts have already started providing justice to the rural people at nominal costs in shorter periods benefiting them substantially in a hassle-free manner, they said in the daylong training course on Wednesday.
Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO) organised the course under Activating Village Courts in Bangladesh Project with financial assistance of European Union and technical cooperation of UNDP at Mithapukur upazila parishad auditorium.
Chairmen and members of different union parishads, union parishad secretaries, NGO officials and executives, male and female beneficiaries of village courts, professionals, journalists and elite participated.
Mithapukur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Harun-Ar-Rashid attended and addressed the training course as the chief guest with Rangpur District Coordinator of ESDO Mahbubul Islam in the chair.
Union parishad chairman Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, union parishad member Shakhawat Hossain, member of Community Based Organisation Bablur Rahman, Moulana Belayet Hossain, Upazila Supervisor of ESDO Rajiur Rahman Raju, also addressed.
A number of beneficiary men and women narrated the benefits, they received from the village courts in recent times and elaborated their understanding of the concept and the legal process associated with the village courts.
The speakers said the village courts have been benefiting the rural people ensuring justice in hassle-free manner and creating congenial and friendly atmosphere among the villagers to resolve minor disputes, problems, issues and conflicts amicably.
They stressed for further strengthening the village courts enhancing capacities of the elected public representatives and all concerned to assist the poor and distressed people in getting justice without knocking doors of the law-enforcers and courts.
The chief guest put special emphasis on capacity building of the public representatives and providing more support and assistance to the local government bodies in achieving the desired success through creating trust of the mass people in the village courts.
