Call to prepare people’s participatory district-wise budget

Speakers at a post-budget discussion here Wednesday underlined the need for preparing people’s participatory national budget for reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the people.
They also put forward the demand for formulating district wise budget from next year so that smooth development of all parts of the country can be ensured reducing the existing regional disparity.
Local unit of Democratic Budget Movement (DBM) held the discussion at Public Library conference hall where various issues, like budget decentralization, peoples’ participation in the budget formulation process, budgetary allocation for the marginalized community and their access to the public services were discussed elaborately.
Prof ANK Noman of Economics Department of Rajshahi University addressed the discussion as a resource person saying making the budgeting process decentralised could be the effective means of attaining the goal of a democratic budget. He also highlighted various aspects of the democratic budget.
With Akbarul Hasan Millat, Convener of DBM in the chair, former chairman of Rajshahi Education Board Prof Nurul Alam, President of Shaw Unnayan, Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Editor of Daily Sonali Sangbad Liakat Ali, Executive Director of Sachetan, Hasinul Islam Chunnu and Director of Barendra Unnayan Prochesta, Foyzullah Chowdhury spoke on the occasion.
Prof Noman emphasised the need for identifying the local needs through proper assessment in the region and bring those under budgetary allocation for the sake of reducing disparity.
