Staff Reporter :In spite of desperate struggle for life, Sumon Hossain, 30, a bus driver, who received fatal injuries when attacked by blockaders in Lakshmipur on Friday night, finally succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. Sumon, the ill-fated bus driver, received deadly injuries as he tried to escape from petrol bomb attack at Kasidbari under Lakshmipur Sadar upazila at around 11:00pm.Police said the Chittagong-bound bus Lakshmipur came under attack when it reached Kasidbari. The driver lost control over the steering as the blockaders hurled petrol bomb at the running bus. He was rushed to Noakhali Medical College Hospital but on the way to the hospital he succumbed to his injuries, police said. At least 40 people have been killed so far since the blockade started.Meanwhile, the BNP-led alliance’s blockade on the 26th day also witnessed arson and vandalism across the country. But vehicles’ movement was normal in Dhaka city. No procession and picketing were seen in support of the blockade in the capital city.A large number of law enforcers have remained deployed across the country to avert any untoward incident. In the capital, a bus was set on fire on Johnson Road near the National Medical College and Hospital in old part of the city on Saturday morning. Fire Service sources said that miscreants set fire to the bus of Gabtoli-Sadarghat route around 10:15am.Three passengers of the bus were injured when they tried to get down hurriedly. They were admitted to National Hospital.On information, a Fire Service unit from Sadarghat station rushed to the spot and doused the flame.In Narayanganj, a Glory Paribahan bus was set ablaze at Bhulta in Rupganj on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway around 6:30am. Eight seats were burnt, but no one was hurt in the incident. The fire was, however, extinguished. Rupganj Police Inspector Mehedi Hasan confirmed the news. Police arrested 24 activists of BNP and Jamaat-Shibir from different areas of the capital in 24 hours till 6:00 am on Saturday.Miscreants set fire to three vehicles, including two CNG-run auto-rickshaws, in separate places of the district early Saturday in Laxmipur. Witnesses said 10 to 12 miscreants set a cement-laden covered van afire at Poddar Bazar in Sadar upazila.Besides, two CNG-run auto-rickshaws were torched by miscreants at Joksin-Poddar Bazar in Waidpur area of the upazila, said Humayun Kabir, Officer-in-Charge of Chandraganj Police Station. In Magura, police arrested 11 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from different parts of the district in 24 hours ending on Saturday morning on charge of violence in the name of the blockade.
