Rangpur Correspondent :
The farmers have achieved a super bumper wheat production in all five districts under Rangpur agriculture region this season breaking all previous records.
According to the department of agriculture extension (DAE) sources, the farmers have produced over 1.02 lakh tonne wheat, higher by 29,490 tonnes or 40.48 per cent than the fixed target of producing 72,841 tonnes this time.
The farmers have cultivated wheat in 31,005 hectares of land against the fixed target of farming the crop in 24,528 hectares to produce 72,840 tonnes wheat exceeding the fixed cultivation target by 6,477 hectares of land or 26.40 per cent this time.
On completion of harvest last week amid favourable climatic conditions, the farmers got an excellent average yield rate of 3.30 tonne wheat per hectare, about 0.33 tonne higher than the targeted average yield rate of 2.97 tonne per hectare this year.
Farmers Solaiman Ali, Abdul Momin and Sukumar Mohanta said they have got bumper wheat production this season. They thanked the government for fixing the wheat purchasing rate at Taka 28 per kilogram.
Horticulture specialist of DAE Khandker Md Mesbahul Islam said bumper wheat production was achieved following expanded cultivation of high yielding wheat varieties using quality seed and latest conservation agriculture (CA)- based technologies.
“The farmers had mostly cultivated high yielding variety wheat like ‘Bijoy’, ‘Pradip’, ‘Sotabdhi’, BARI Gom25, BARI Gom26, BARI Gom27, BARI Gom2 and BARI Gom26 to get average yield rates between 3.07 and 3.64 tonne per hectare,” he added.
Extension agronomist Anarul Haque at Dinajpur Hub of International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) also expressed satisfaction over bumper wheat production following use of high yielding variety seed and CA-based technologies.
“Wheat farming has become very popular and more profitable among farmers as they achieved repeated bumper production with lucrative prices in recent years and exceeded the fixed cultivation target this season in Rangpur region,” he said.
Talking to BSS, adviser of agriculture of BRAC International (South Asia and Africa) MA Mazid expressed satisfaction over bumper wheat production predicting brighter prospect of the crop in the region.
Earlier, wheat production was affected due to adverse impacts of high temperature, use of low quality local variety seeds and other reasons.
“However, the farmers now have been sowing high quality, disease resistant and stress tolerant variety wheat seeds timely using the latest, mechanised and low cost technologies after harvesting short duration Aman rice to get bumper production,” Mazid added.
The internationally reputed agriculture scientist also suggested for expanded cultivation of less irrigation water consuming cereal crops like wheat and maize adopting the latest CA-based technologies at reduced costs to ensure food security amid the ensuing impacts of climate change.
