Bumper production of bitter-gourd likely in Bogra, Sylhet

The bitter-gourd growers of Bogra district expect bumper production of the crops in this season owing to favorable weather conditions and timely supply of necessary agro-inputs.
 The poor farmers in the district are becoming self-reliant by cultivating bitter gourd on their cropland as it has proved profitable. Department of Agriculture Extension Deputy Director Bazlur Rashid said, “Around 500 farmers of 12 upazilas in the district have cultivated the vegetable on 490 acres of land this year.” “They have been given necessary training on cultivating vegetables like bitter gourd, pumpkin and so many high-yielding varieties of vegetables,” He added. Bitter-gourd grower Ferdous Hossain of Arulia village under sadar upazila said, “People are showing more interest in bitter gourd farming for the last few years as it is profitable.” “If we get timely supply of necessary agro-inputs in farming bitter-gourd, we will be highly encouraged every season.” He added. Enamul Haque of Gunaher village under Dupchanchia upazila said, “I have cultivated 0.25 acres of bitter-gourd in my cropland spending tk. 5000 and I expect tk. 20000 as profit from the land in this year.” “I had sold a huge quantity of the vegetable over the last few years.”
