Bumper litchi production likely in N dists

A bumper production of litchi is likely following excellent growth of the tender fruit in the orchards amid favourable climatic condition this season in the northern districts, officials and experts said.
The farmers are busy now in nursing litchi trees in their orchards as formation of the tender fruit continues superbly after recent rainfalls and harvest of the juiciest, tasty and fleshy fruit begins from the next month.
Meanwhile, the bigger litchi traders or their representatives from different parts of the country have started flocking to the region and bargaining with orchard owners to purchase the fruit in advance like in the previous seasons.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, over 85 percent of the litchi trees in about 9,000 small, medium and big-sized litchi orchards and homesteads bloomed massively earlier this season.
Presently, hundreds of litchi orchards have been set up on commercial basis in Dinajpur, Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Thakurgaon, Panchagarh and other northern districts.
Talking to BSS Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam predicted bumper production of litchi this season and said that commercial basis cultivation of the fruit has become popular in recent years.
The farmers have been cultivating high yielding varieties like China-3 and Bedana, early varieties like Bombay, Mozaffarpuri and Madrazi and late variety Kanthali litchi following repeated bumper productions and lucrative prices every year.
He suggested for spraying 80 percent Sulphur on litchi tress if
mite attack is found following rise in temperature or ‘Mentozeb’ or
‘Propikonazole’ as per recommended dose to prevent powdery nose mildew or anthrax nose attack to get better production.
Talking to BSS, litchi growers Atiar Rahman, Harunur Rashid, Aminul Haque, Nilchand Roy, Abdus Sobhan and Farhad Ali said they are expecting bumper litchi yield this time like in the previous seasons to earn excellent profits.
Farmers Abu Hossain, Mahbub Ali, Kafil Uddin, Abdus Samad and Nazrul Islam expressed their happiness over excellent formation of tender litchi after superb flowering and hoped to earn better profits getting bumper production this year.
Agriculture and Environment Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid predicted bumper litchi production this season if the climatic condition remains favourable till June next.
Agronomist Anarul Haque said the process of fruit formation has been continuing excellent now ushering a real hope for bumper litchi production this season in the region if the climatic condition remains favourable.
Deputy Director of the DAE Zulfiquer Haider said the farmers have boosted commercial basis litchi cultivation in their orchards following repeated bumper production with excellent market price in recent years.
