Bumper BARI Sorisha-14 production makes farmers happy

Bumper production of BARI Sorisha-14 has made the farmers happy this season after they cultivated the same with assistance of RDRS Bangladesh successfully adopting new cropping pattern in Rangpur division.
According to the officials of RDRS Bangladesh, the farmers have achieved an average yield rate of 1.6 tonnes seed of the high yielding variety (HYV) BARI Sorisha-14 mustard per hectare to reap more profits this year.
The farmers had cultivated BARI Sorisha-14 adopting the “Short duration Aman rice- mustard or potato-mungbean- short duration Aus (pariza) rice” cropping pattern evolved by RDRS Bangladesh to get four crops from the same land annually.
During this season, RDRS Bangladesh extended assistance to 2,200 farmers in cultivating BARI Sorisha-14 on 2,200 bigha lands, with one bigha land each, in Rangpur division after harvesting short duration Aman rice under the cropping pattern.
The farmers had cultivated BARI-14 Sorisha-14 on 190 bigha in Rangpur, 510 bigha in Nilphamari, 350 bigha in Gaibandha, 330 bigha in Dinajpur, 270 bigha in Lalmonirhat, 200 bigha in Kurigram, 230 bigha in Thakurgaon and on 120 bigha lands in Panchagarh districts under Rangpur division this season.
After harvesting BARI Sorisha-14 recently, farmer Ramesh Chandra of village Melabar under Kishoreganj upazila of Nilphamari got 1.65 tonnes yield rate per hectare, which is much higher than the yield rate of the traditional mustard varieties.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) for Rangpur Zulfiquer Haider said the farmers have been reaping more profits adopting the newer cropping pattern in recent years.
