Breastfeeding for ensuring nutrition of babies stressed

Health experts at a meeting have stressed on ensuring proper breastfeeding and home-made foodstuffs for the babies to meet their nutritional demand for healthier growth.
They expressed the opinion at the meeting organised by Rangpur District Nutrition Coordination Committee with UNICEF assistance at the conference room of Adhunik Sadar Hospital in Nilphamari.
District Nutrition Officer Saniya Islam Khondker delivered keynote presentation in the meeting presided over by Civil Surgeon of Nilphamari Dr Abdur Rashid.
Medical Officer of Sadar Upazila Maternity and Child Welfare Centre Dr Rokhsana Begum, Child Specialist Dr Enamul Haque, Medical Officer of District Adhunik Sadar Hospital Dr Moniruzzaman Moni, took part as discussants.
Nilphamari District Livestock Officer Shahjalal Khondker, Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension Golam Md Idris, District Information Officer Mozammel Haque, District Primary Education Officer Dilip Kumar Banik and District Secondary Education officer Shafikul Islam also spoke.
In her presentation, Saniya Islam Khondker narrated about the present child nutrition situation in Nilphamari with statistics and various government steps taken for improving the situation.
“A total of 2,400 babies are suffering from severe malnutrition in six upazilas of Nilphamari district where number of such babies is the highest in Kishoreganj upazila,” she said putting stress on comprehensive efforts to overcome the situation.
The speakers put maximum emphasis on creating awareness among the common people and mothers to ensure proper breast-feeding for at least six months and providing home- made foods to the babies and children.
Dr Rokhsana Begum laid importance on successful implementation of the comprehensive national nutrition service programme being implemented by the government to prevent malnutrition of all, including babies, mothers and children.
The Civil Surgeon stressed on comprehensive GO-NGO efforts to disseminate knowledge on necessity of breastfeeding among the common people, selecting and consuming nutritious foodstuffs to ensure nutrition of the babies for building a healthy nation.
