Awami League presidium member and Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said BNP has been resorting to falsehood over the upazila polls to energise its activists.
“It has turned out to be the habit of BNP to resort to falsehood. They (BNP leaders) have been lying everyday over the upazila polls to energise their activists,” he said.
Quader said this on Saturday while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion at Awami League president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi in the city.
Awami Sangskritik Forum organised the discussion marking the first death anniversary of former president of the Republic and veteran Awami League (AL) leader Md. Zillur Rahman. President of the Forum Sheikh Ujjal chaired the discussion, also addressed, among others, by AL joint general secretary Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak, organising secretary Ahmed Hossain, office secretary Dr Abdul Sobhan Golap and AL central working committee member SM Kamal Hossain.
Quader said that the elections were held in free, fair and transparent manner now than ever before. “We have witnessed various elections during BNP regime, but polls are held credibly now in the real sense of the term,” the senior Awami League leader added.
The Minister said the government has been extending all sorts of support and cooperation to the Election Commission for holding credible polls.
Recalling the contributions of late president Zillur Rahman to the Republic and Awami League as well, Quader said, “He (Zillur Rahman) steered the party (AL) with his deep wisdom and farsightedness following the 1/11 political changeover of 2007 and arrest of our leader Sheikh Hasina the same year.”

“As the acting president of Awami League late Zillur Rahman had immense contributions in the movement for restoration of democracy and he could retain the unity of the party at its crucial juncture when our party president Sheikh Hasina was in captivity for 11 months and during her six-month stay abroad for treatment,” the senior AL leader added paying deep homage to Zillur Rahman.
