The BNP leaders and workers are anxious over the government strategy to hold elections by jailing the party’s top leaders, including the party chairperson.
Taking into cognizance the Prime Minister’s call to her party lawmakers to take preparation for the next polls, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also told her
party leaders to go their respective localities to ensure their nomination for next parliamentary polls.
The party is now planning a new strategy ahead of next polls to forge greater platform in the name of national unity with liberal parties by keeping Jamaat aside. It thinks the security situation is worsening in the country as the militancy is on rise.
“The government is responsible for the rise of militancy in the country. They have killed democracy, which encourages extremism. The government should step-down immediately and hold a fresh and participatory election under a nonpartisan government,” Brigadier General (retd) ASM Hannan Shah, the BNP standing committee member, told The New Nation on Thursday.
He said, BNP as a big political party is well prepared to take part in the national polls. “We and our allies are well prepared to take part in the national polls. But, the polls must be held under a neutral government,” he said.
BNP chairperson’s advisor Advocate Khandakar Mahbub Hossain told The New Nation, “The people of Bangladesh are now in panic due uncertainty of security. If such a situation continues for long, then the economy and social structure of the country will be collapsed. To overcome the situation, national polls must be held to form a people’s government. And the people will stand beside the elected government to eliminate militancy forever.”
“We hope, if the government understands the matter, then they will hold a national poll under nonpartisan system soon. We hope such days are not far away,” he said.
Sources said, the BNP high-ups think that the government feels pressures from various quarters to hold a fresh Parliament election soon to create atmosphere to combat with extremism. They think after the Gulshan and Sholakia attacks the government is facing such huge pressures. On Monday, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked her party lawmakers to take preparations for the next polls.
“The government is seemed to give jail to Begum Khaleda Zia in false cases to keep her away from the next polls like Tarique Rahman. They are involved in such conspiracy also to send jail a number of other popular leaders of the party with the same ill motive,” said Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, the standing committee member of the BNP.
He also asked the government to hold a free and fair election soon, even jailing the party leaders, including him.
The BNP senior leaders said, their party is not thinking to declare any big political programme at the moment.
