BNP leader Rafiq gets bail in 7 violence cases

The High Court on Tuesday granted bail to BNP standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah in seven violence cases filed with four city police stations.
An HC bench, comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Mohammad Ataur Rahman Khan, passed the order after hearing separate petitions.
Former Attorney General AJ Mohammad Ali and Barrister Ragib Rouf Chowdhury stood for the defence. Barrister Ragib Rouf said of the total 28 cases against him, Rafiqul Islam are already on bail in 14, apart from the seven filed with Pallabi, Mirpur, Matijheel and Paltan police stations.
He will file appeal for bail in the rest seven, he added. Earlier On May 16, Barrister Rafiqul was sent to jail in seven violence cases after he surrendered before separate courts. The cases were filed against the BNP leader with different police stations for allegedly committing subversive activities during hartal and blockade programmes enforced by the BNP-led alliance in 2015.
Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Hossain granted bail to Barrister Rafiqul in three cases filed with Paltan Police Station and rejected the bail pleas in four cases filed with the same police station, and cancelled bail plea in another case filed with Motijheel Police Station.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mazharul Islam rejected the bail petitions in two cases filed with Mirpur Police Station while Metropolitan Magistrate Khorshed Alam granted bail to Rafiqul in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station. Besides, Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi granted the BNP leader bail in a case filed with Pallabi Police Station and sent him to jail rejecting bail plea in another case filed with the same police station.
