UNB, Dhaka :
BNP on Saturday alleged that the government is forcibly setting up Rampal Thermal Power Plant near the Sundarbans giving up the country’s interest though it knows it very well that it will badly affect the mangrove forest.
“A vast portion of the Sundarbans is in India. There’d been a move to set up a thermal power plant near it. But, India shelved the plan following their people’s strong protest and filing of a case,” said BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
“But, our government’s stance is this plant must be installed near the Sundarbans at any cost because of its deep affection for (India). It can’t back off from it, no matter how much destruction it invites,” he told a
roundtable discussion. Like the Rampal power plant one, the BNP leader further alleged, the government has been signing deals with India one after another ignoring the country’s interests.
Save the Sundarbans Foundation arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity, marking The Sundarbans Day. The day will be observed on Sunday in a befitting manner.
Rizvi said, the Rampal power plan is being set up near the world’s largest mangrove forest only for the Prime Minister’s stubbornness to make the neighbouring country happy.
Mentioning that their party is not against India, he said they are opposing plant as it will harm Bangladesh’s interests and badly affect the environment.
He urged the organisers of the roundtable to continue their movement to mobilise people for protecting the country’s valuable sites and environment braving all the obstacles and attacks. “The government will attack you repeatedly to have its evil desire.
But, no evil design of any fascist government can be implemented if people get organised and put ups a strong resistance.”
