BSS, Gaibandha :
Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) has been playing significant role to boost production of staple food rice in the district since 2005 through providing seed, irrigation and other technological facilities to farmers.
Office sources said the BMDA started its activities in greater Rajshahi in 1992 under the Ministry of Agriculture. In course of time, all the rest districts including Gaibandha of Rajshahi division were brought under the jurisdiction of BMDA in 2005.
Since then, the BMDA has been implementing different development projects like installation of deep tube wells, irrigation water distribution system and farmers training here to push forward the district towards uplift as per the resolution of the organization.
According to sources the BMDA installed a total of 363- electricity run deep tube wells (DTWs) at its command areas of the district so far and from the DTWs irrigated water was being supplied to about 9,000 hectares of land where about 52,000 tonnes of rice are produced.
Abdul Hai, a farmer of Barobaldia village under Sadar upazila, said
mainly the irrigated water was supplied to the boro paddy land during the boro season to help the farmers produce the crop at low cost.
They also get free irrigation facilities from the BMDA during the Aman seasons when drought like situation prevails in the district, he added.
GM Selim Parvez, a Boro paddy grower of Hossainpur Village under Fulchhari Upazila said, “The farmers are to pay Tk 1,500-2,000 against a bigha of land to purchase irrigation water from the local providers who operate their power or diesel run shallow machines”.
On the contrary, the farmers of BMDA command areas are to pay only Tk 800 to the authority on irrigation charge coupon system to get irrigation water for the same one bigha of land from the BMDA operated deep tube wells, he also said.
Similar facilities have also been ensured to the farmers of project command areas of Rangpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur division, said M. Habibur Rahman Khan, acting superintendent engineer, BMDA, Rangpur circle.
