Bioethics practices to create responsible citizens stressed

As massive transformation is taking place in society, speakers at a training programme on Friday stressed the need for promoting bioethics practices in every spheres of life to stop injustice as well as remove all sorts of malpractice.
“Bioethics has gained immense important in the world due to rapid advancement in science and technology, drastic change in macroeconomic planning and globalization,” General Secretary of Bangladesh Bioethics Society (BBS) Prof Shamima Parvin Lasker said on sidelines of the training programme at the Press Institute of Bangladesh(PIB) .
Bangladesh Bioethics Society in collaboration with Press Institute of Bangladesh(PIB) and American University of Sovereign Nation (AUSN), USA are jointly are organizing the three-day Intensive Bioethics Training Course .
BBS President Prof Taslima Monsoor and dean and provost and America University of Sovereign Nation (AUSN), USA Prof Dr Darryl Macer, resource persons and BBS leaders, among others, addressed the training programme.
Bioethics is the understanding of right, responsibility, justices and moral interaction for living being, Prof Shamima said, adding it includes medical ethics, environmental ethics and ethical, legal and social issues arising from biotechnology.
“Bioethics teaches how to balance between different benefits, risks and duties,” she said though bioethics has existed in every region throughout the ages but in the 1970s it emerged as a discipline of academic in USA due to the increasing complexity of medical advances.
Associate Professor and head of department of Dental Public Health of City Dental College Dr Shahana Dastagir Sunny, who is participating in the training course, said bioethics practice is very urgent for physicians to grow their professional commitment towards patients. It will help develop ethical values of medical professionals, which ultimately contribute to stop malpractices in the health sector, she added.
Other speakers said bioethics should be incorporated in the education systems for developing moral values of students, which will them to become sincere, honest and patriotic citizens of the country.
They urged the government as well as private sector to come forward for promoting bioethics practices in the all spheres of society aiming to protect human rights and to stop all sorts of irregularities and injustices.
