Jagannath University (JnU) authorities proposed a Tk 132.70cr budget for fiscal year 2019-20 for the university. However, the allocation for research is only Tk1.70cr, which is 1.3 per cent of the proposed total, resulting in the lack of much-needed equipment in the laboratories of the different departments of the university.
According to the budget section of the university, the Tk132.70cr budget will cover education and research activities of the university, convocation,cultural organizations management, as well as expenditure on general activities.
As per the new budget, the university will spend only Tk 1.70cr for research sector which is 1.3 per cent of the total budget. Last year, the university had a Tk117.32cr budget with only 0.90% allocation for research. Although this year the budget forresearch somewhat increased but the total amount of money this year proposed for research sector still not enough. In addition, every year, poor content, inadequate equipment, and lack of chemical products lead students to unsatisfactory research.
However, every year the paucity of lab equipment and chemical products stagnate the research environment. Students of the university always have to travel daily to and from the university in the absence of residential facilities. Even, there has been little allocation for the development of the departments. Students often have to forego the afternoon bus on their way home. After a long day, they do not get enough time to prepare for research.
Mahdi Hasan, a final-year student of the English Department, said “We want to carry out Language teaching and cultural research. But we don’t have any central research center that can inspire us to make something better.”
Regarding the budget for research, JnU Life and Earth Science Faculty Dean Prof Kazi Saifuddin said: “The research sector should be given the highest importance in the JnU budget. Overall allocation for research in every university of Bangladesh is not enough. He urged the finance committee to increase the allocation for the research sector.
Contacted Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni told the New Nation that “We are planning to form a special fund system for research sector in every university of Bangladesh, we already established it in BUET.Gradually we would try to establish it in every public university of the country.”
