Bhola farmers happy over harvesting Zink enriched BRRI Dhan 64

A crop harvesing field day has observed at Nobipur cyclone shelter field in Bhola sadar upazila of Bhola district on Zinc enriched rice variety BRRI Dhan64 under Delivery of high Zinc Rice in Bangladesh project.
 People’s Development Institute (PDI) has implementing this project with the support of HarvestPlus Bangladesh. PDI has arranged enjoyable and splendor field days. Where attend people of any occupation especially demo and other local male and female farmers. BRRI Dhan64 produces 1kg/square metre which is the highest result among neighboring varieties.
The honorable guests explain what high zinc rice is. The chief gust of this function Mr. Deb Dulal Dhali (AAD, Department of Agricultural Extension) said to attendance, “Bangladesh is all set to release the world’s first zinc-enriched rice variety, capable of fighting diarrhoea and pneumonia-induced childhood deaths and stunting. Zinc, iron and vitamin-A are the three most vital micronutrients, deficiency of which hampers children’s. Natural growth and decrease their disease prevention capacity. In Bangladesh, over 40 percent children under five are stunted while an estimated 44 percent children of the same age group are at risk of zinc deficiency. BRRI dhan64, which have been bred to have higher amounts of micronutrients, can help provide these needed vitamins and minerals”.
A detailed conception discussed by Mr. Jahid Hussain (ARDO, HarvestPlus Bangladesh) about on the variety characteristics, seed production technologies, drying processing and storage.
In the closing speech, Mr. Harun Ur Rashid (ED, PDI) thanks Dr. Md. Alamgir Hossain, Principal scientific officer at the plant breeding division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) for discovering the hi-zinc rice. He also thanks Dr. Khairul Bashar, Country Manager of HarvestPlus Bangladesh for developed Rice Seed Network for efficient and quick delivery of quality seed to end users involving NGOs and private seed entrepreneurs throughout Bangladesh.
This is the first time of Zn enriched rice has cultivated in Bhola district. Farmers and other persons highly appreciated for this variety. They want to cultivate high zinc rice for next season. They have collected BRRI Dhan64 seeds from the demo farmers of PDI-HarvestPlus and they preserved as per instruction of PDI. All the participants have given thanks to the HarvestPlus Bangladesh.
