Bhairab river pollution kills fishes

Fishes of different species were seen floating dead in the River Bhairab on Friday and Saturday.
 People of Nawapara industrial area gathered on the bank of the river and engaged themselves in collecting fishes, locals said.
Talking to New Nation, Rabiul Hossain, mayor Nawapara Municipality told that varieties of fishes were found dead in the River Due to lack of oxygen. ‘The incident have been taking place for last three days’, he added.
Anisur Rahman, upazila fisheries officer, Abhaynagar told journalists that fishes of different species were dying in the River Bhairab due to chemical contamination.
Boatman Manik at Shankarpasha boat harbor told that water of the river turned into black due to waste contamination.
Khairul Bashar, principal of a local college told New Nation that he saw people of the area collecting varieties of fishes from the River Bhairab. ‘Water of the river turned into black due to chemical contamination’, he added.
Abdul Mannan of Madhyapur village told that water of the river were being polluted due to throwing wastes of a heavy factory that is situated along the river. ‘The factory was fined by the department of environment few months back.
