BCL leader gets 2 -yr jail for carrying firearm during polls

A leader of the ruling Awami League’s student wing in Chittagong has been sentenced to two years in prison for carrying firearms during the Union Parishad polls inHathazari upazila on saturday
Nurul Azim Rony, Bangladesh Chhatra League’s (BCL) general secretary for the Chittagong metro unit, was held outside a polling centre in Hathazari Upazila on Saturday.Local police OC Md Ismail said Rony has been handed over to the prison authorities on Sunday morning to serve his sentence for violating the electoral code.”He has been also been booked under the Arms Act,” said the police officer.
Rony was arrested with a pistol, ammunition, stamps and Tk 26,000 in cash by a mobile court in front of a voting centre at the Mirzapur Union.Locals said the Awami League chairman aspirant for the union council Nurul Absar happens to be Rony’s relative.On the night of Thurynsday, an Awami League activist was shot dead in Mirzapur, when the official poll campaign period ended.
Meanwhile, sit-in strike was observed in the chittagong court buildingpremises yesterday afternoon by the activists of chatra league demanding release of the city BCL secretary Rony .
Eye witnesses sources said a procession of BCL , city unity stormed in the court hill premises at about 1 pm and paraded the whole court hill area and later took sit-in position infront of Judicial magistrate court demanding release of Roney by end of the day otherwise indefinite strike will be launched from today , they announced. Among others general secretary of Ctg university BCL unit Fazle Rabbi sujan, ctg college BCL unit leader Mahmudul Karim spoke in the strike rally. Police inspector of Kotwali thana Noor Mohammad told that huge numbers of chatra league activists turn out in the court hill premises and hold rally infront of district commissioner office and they started sit-in programs there. Mentionable that BCL leader Rony was arrested with arms from Hathazari mirzapur polling centre on Saturday by theJudicial magistrate Harunur Rashid during polling time. Police recovered one 9MM pistol, 15 rounds bullets and cash Tk.26 thosuand from his possession.Later he was handed over to Hathazari police. Election Mobile court later yesterday convicted him with two year imprisonment under arms act, court sources said. Rony was sent to jail custody yesterday. An arms case also filed with the Hathazari thana against Rony, sources said.
