Weekend Plus Desk :
Resigning from a job is not as easy as it sounds. Ask anyone how he feels before letting his boss or the immediate supervisor know that he is quitting.
We are sure they would have rehearsed a thousand times before breaking the news to the concerned authority in the office.
How you leave your job and your last impression at your workplace matters a lot because this is a small world, right? And you never know you might have to work in the same company or with the same set of people in the future. Moreover, if you leave a current workplace on a bitter note, you will never get a chance to change that impression. This might make you regret your decision and you might have to live with some disturbing memories for the rest of your life.
The reason for resigning-whether you are leaving your job because you found a new one or quitting because you don’t like what you are doing-hardly matters but what makes a difference is how you leave the job. In case, you have decided to quit your job and wondering how to let your boss know about it without ruffling any feathers, here’s what you need to do.
Let your immediate supervisor know first before anyone else
News like an employee resigning from his job can spread like wildfire in the office. No matter how much you trust your best friend in the office, your colleague-cum-confidante or someone else, always make sure that your immediate supervisor or manager is the first person you inform about your impending resignation. Remember, everyone works in a very competitive atmosphere in an office, so not all will have your best interest in their hearts. You need to be very careful while talking about quitting your job in front of colleagues.
Submit (or mail) a proper and efficient resignation letter
Treat a resignation letter just like you treat your resume or a cover letter while applying for a job. Everyone is very careful about what they put in their resume; they recheck the information provided in the CV multiple times before applying for a job. The same amount of meticulousness, if not more, should be applied while writing a resignation letter too. The letter should have a proper structure; it should be brief, crisp and to the point. It does not matter if you left your job on a good or bad note, your resignation letter should always carry a line expressing your gratitude for the company and for giving you the opportunity to work there.
Always provide your employer with a smooth transition plan
The real task begins after submitting the resignation letter and once the notice period begins. This period of transition is not only very daunting for the employee who is leaving but for the employer too. Hence, your boss or immediate supervisor would think very highly of you if you submit a proper transition plan at the time of resignation. The plan should include the outstanding projects that you are handling, the deadlines that need to be met, etc. Also, mention what all needs to be completed and how much it would be possible for you to do during your notice period. This would not only be very helpful for your employers but for your successor as well.
It is very important to quit your job the right way and it’s even better if you leave in a friendly note. Maintaining good relationships in the professional world would help you grow stronger in this competitive world. So, whenever you decide to quit your job make sure not to burn the bridges forever.
