Considering the global crisis, the government has already introduced area-based load-shedding for one to two hours across the country from July 19 in a bid to tackle the ongoing power crisis. Besides, it has also suggested the government officials, semi-government and autonomous bodies to be economic in using fuel of their vehicles.
Against this backdrop, the Bangladesh Bank (BB) has directed all the banks to cut use of electricity and fuel for the next one year till June 2023. The BB has issued the instruction through a notification on Tuesday.
According to the notification, banks have to reduce the consumption of gas and lubricant by 20 percent and electricity by 25 percent in the next one year starting from July this year.
The money so saved from this austerity move won’t be used in any other sector or any purposes, the notification added. The notification has also directed the bank’s authorities to preserve the documents and information regarding reduction of use in their respective head offices.
As per the notification, the BB officials will monitor the matter strictly and once the teams from the BB go for inspection the banks and they should have to show the data regarding use of fuel and power cut.
In addition, the data will have to be included in the annual fiscal report spanning from December 2022-December 2023.
