Bangladesh has been awarded two projects to be implemented under a programme of Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
The projects are “Small scale inland and/or coastal aquaculture project in the Indian Ocean Region” and “Exploration of economically important marine flora from the Bay of Bengal a pilot study”, said a press release here on Tuesday.
The Sixth Bi-annual Meeting of Committee of Senior Officials (CSO) of was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on 22-23 May.
The Government of the Republic of Indonesia, the current Chairman of IORA, with the support of IORA Secretariat, hosted the Meeting.
Senior government attended the meeting from 20 Member States of the IORA-Australia, Bangladesh, Comoros, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
The Bangladesh delegation was led by Rear Admiral M Khurshed Alam (Retd.), Secretary (Maritime Affairs Unit), Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The CSO approved six projects from the IORA Special fund. Among the six projects, Bangladesh was awarded with the two pilot projects.
The meeting recognized Bangladesh as one of the world’s leading inland fisheries producers and acknowledged that aquaculture production in Bangladesh has shown an average growth of 28 percent with extensive and highly diversified fisheries resources.
The meeting also took into account the fact that, of the total fish production of Bangladesh, aquaculture accounts for 39 percent.
Considering all the factors, CSO decided that Bangladesh is best positioned to host the project of US $50,000, which is titled “Small scale inland and/or coastal aquaculture project in the Indian Ocean Region”.
The meeting realized the fact that, the vast ground of marine resources of the Indian Ocean is yet to be explored and the pace of development of the application of biotechnology to the marine biodiversity is not up to the mark.
The meeting opined that availability of the information regarding the marine flora would enable the IORA countries to utilize the resource in the most effective way as well as provide input for future pathways.
Keeping such views in the perspectives, CSO nominated Bangladesh to host the project namely “Exploration of economically important marine flora from the Bay of Bengal a pilot study” of $20,000.
