Bangabandhu had dreams of football: Abul Kashem

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not only a statesman but also a sports lover. He played for Dhaka Wanderers Club in the Dhaka First Division Football League. Director of Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra valiant freedom fighter Abul Kashem disclosed this information in an intimate interview. Abul Kashem is a disciple of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Abul Kashem is now almost eighty years old. But he could not leave sports arena as he loves sports very much. He is now a sports organizer. Earlier, he was a famed athletes. He clinched medals in inter-school football tournament, inter-college athletics, inter-college swimming. He won medals in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) Olympics. He became first in high-jump competition, became second in pole vault competition, and also became second in hurdles competitions. After the independence of Bangladesh, he was a member of the executive committee of Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF). He is now Director of Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra. When This Reporter talked to him he said, ” Bangabandhu had a dream that the footballers of Bangladesh will reach the world level football competitions. After the independence of Bangladesh, when the country was ravaged by war, Bangabandhu played a key role to form Bangladesh Football Federation, Bangladesh Cricket Control Board, Bangladesh Hockey Federation and Bangladesh Kabaddi Federations. Bangabandhu was really a sports lover.” Abul Kashem said, “Bangabandhu said to me you are my sports adviser. You have plenty of knowledge about sports. You should execute your merit.” Abul Kashem said, ” When I see the disastrous conditions of Bangladesh’s football, I feel pity. Bangladesh’s football cannot overcome the catastrophic conditions.”
