UNB, Dhaka :
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday categorically said the August 15 carnage was not just a strike on a family only, but its main aim was to take revenge against the establishment of a country and state through defeating Pakistani occupation forces in the Liberation War.
“The massacre on August 15 was carried out on a family only, but in the true sense, it was not just on a family,” she said while speaking at a blood donation programme organised by Bangladesh Krishak League on the premises of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the city marking the National Mourning Day.
The Prime Minister described the assassination of Bangabandhu along with most of his family members on August 15, 1975 as a strike against the victory of the Bangalee nation, its emergence and establishment of a state and as a revenge of the defeat of Pakistani occupation forces in the Liberation War.
“The main objective of the killing was to take revenge of the defeat in the Liberation War,” she said.
In this connection, Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the massacre was carried out to ensure that the Bangalee nation would never be able to stand keeping its head always high.
“This was proved once again through the brutal killing of four national leaders, who fought the Liberation War as per the directives and planning of Bangabandhu and won it, in jail,” she said.
Referring to the ideals of Bangabandhu, the Prime Minister said the architect of independent Bangladesh wanted to turn the country into a developed and rich one as well as bring smile to the faces of the distressed people.
Besides, she said, the aim of Bangabandhu was to change the fate of the farmers and the working class people of the country.
Talking about her homecoming in 1981 to stand by the distressed people, the Prime Minister in an emotion-choked voice said she had not been allowed to return to her own country for long six years since the August tragedy of 1975.
She firmly mentioned that the truth must win and independence of the people must succeed as her government has been working to implement the dream of the great leader.
Sheikh Hasina expressed her firm determination that the people of all classes living in independent Bangladesh will surely enjoy improved living standard and her government has been working to this end.
The Awami League government has already undertaken massive programmes so that no one could dare to neglect the people of Bangladesh, she said.
In this connection, the Prime Minister said her government, after assuming office in 2009, took the country much ahead towards progress and development and Bangladesh is now recognised as a role model of development in the world.
Referring to her election pledge to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income country by 2021, she said the country has already been declared as a lower middle-income one.
She expressed her firm resolute that Bangladesh would be a middle-income country by much ahead of 2021 and the nation will observe the centenary of Bangabandhu’s birth in 2020 as a middle-income country.
Underscoring the need for ensuring dignified living standard of farmers, the Prime Minister said her government has extended supports to the farmers with all kinds of agriculture materials.
The farmers are now getting assistance from the government directly through their bank accounts opened only for Tk 10, she said asking the leaders and workers of Bangladesh Krishak League to stand by the farmers.
At the beginning of the programme, a one-minute silence was observed to show respect to the martyrs of August 15.
Later, Awami League President and the Prime Minister inaugurated the blood donation camp at the green square on the premises of the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim, local MP Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, AL agriculture secretary Dr Abdur Razzaque and Bangladesh Krishak League general secretary Advocate Khandaker Shamshul Huq Reza also spoke at the programme with Bangladesh Krishak League president Alhaj Mohammad Motahar Hossain Mollah in the chair.
