National Human Rights Commission Chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman feels former Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman and a few others may have been made scapegoats to cover up the cyber theft of $81 million from the foreign exchange reserves.
He has also criticised the way the finance minister hastily announced the name
of the new governor despite the forming of a “search committee” to recommend names of two potential deputy governors. The chief of the rights body was speaking at a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club on Friday.
“The head of the organisation where an aberration has taken place must take the responsibility for the anomaly. There is no scope for deliverance by making someone the scapegoat,” he said. Atiur Rahman was compelled to resign as governor of the central bank on Tuesday under pressure over his alleged attempt to cover up the heist.
Soon after, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith announced the name of Fazle Kabir as the new governor of the Bangladesh Bank and informed of the government’s decision to remove two deputy governors. “Don’t think you have discharged your responsibilities by making a few persons scapegoats. The nation will never forgive any attempt to cover up such a huge irregularity,” Mizanur said, taking an indirect dig at the finance minister.
