Awami League candidate for mayor post Atiqul Islam won the race in the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) by-election with a big margin.
Atiqul polled 8,39,302
votes while his nearest rival Shafin Ahmed of Jatiya Party bagged 52,429 votes, showing a difference of 7,86,873 votes.
Returning Officer (RO) Abul Kashem announced the results from the result collection and announcement centre set up at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre around 1:30am on Friday.
He said, the overall turnout in the election was 31.05 per cent.
“The gazette on the election result will be published next week. We can send the final results to the Local Government Division after publication of the gazette,” he said.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda expressed his satisfaction at the successful end of the DNCC mayor by-polls and new councillors election in the both DNCC and DSCC, despite low voter turnout.
“Everyone’s voting right has been completely restored. We created opportunities for everyone to vote. The voter turnout on election day does not reflect the real scenario of voting in Bangladesh,” he said.
The CEC gave his views during a rally on Friday. It began on the South Plaza of National Parliament, ending at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre.
When asked about the reasons of the low voter turnout, the CEC said: “I think there are three main reasons. First, the new mayor’s tenure is for shortened term. Second, the main opposition party did not participate. Third, there rained on the election day. As such people were reluctant to leave their homes.”
In the DNCC, five candidates vied for the mayor post, while 116 candidates for 18 general councillor posts and 45 aspirants for six women reserved seats. Of them, one general councillor candidate was elected unopposed in the city.
The three other mayor candidates were NPP’s Anisur Rahman (electoral symbol mango) and PDP’s Shahin Khan (electoral symbol tiger) and independent runner Abdur Rahim (electoral symbol table clock).
The mayor post fell vacant after Annisul Huq died on 30 November 2017. The last mayor election was held on 28 April 2015.
In the DSCC, there were 125 candidates for 18 general councillor posts and 24 women for six reserved seats.
