A body of a senior highway police official was found at a ditch near Birulia Bridge on the Turag River on the Mirpur-Ashulia road in the city’s Rupnagar area on Wednesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mizanur Rahman Talukder, 50, Asistant Sperintendent of Police (ASP) at Highway Police (Savar circle).
Talukder, hailing from Tangail district, used to reside at Sector-5 of Uttara in the capital, Police said. Syed Shahid Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rupnagar Police Station, said that Talukder’s body was found on the Mirpur-Ashulia road near Birulia Bridge around 11:00am.
He suspected the ASP was strangled to death as a piece of cloth was found wrapped around his neck.
“We suspected that he was strangled to death by some unidentified miscreants and the body has been kept near the Birulia Bridge,” the police official said.
Police also recovered police uniform and the bunch of keys of his private car and residence from a bag under his possession, the OC said.
Mystery shrouded the death as no relatives, including wife, visited the spot after being informed by police, he said.
Seven hours after the recovery of the body, Talukder’s wife, daughter, nephew and brothers saw the body at Rupnagar Police Station, the police official said.
The deceased brother Masum Talukder filed a case with the police station in this connection, the OC said.
“We are investigating the incident,” the police official said.
The body was kept at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) morgue for an autopsy, he said.
