One more case has been filed against former Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) vice president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur and five others.
A Dhaka University (DU) student filed the case with Kotwali police station on Monday accusing six people, including Nur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (DC-media) Walid Hossain confirmed the matter to media on Tuesday.
“It is the same plaintiff who filed a case against them with Lalbagh police station on Sunday,” he said.
Walid said the case was filed alleging kidnapping, rape, abetting rape, and under the Digital Security Act.
According to the case dockets, the key accused Hasan Al Mamun, convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, allegedly raped the victim on January 3.
The others accused in the case are joint conveners of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council Nazmul Hassan Shohag and Md Saiful Islam, vice president of the organization’s DU unit Nazmul Huda, and Abdullah Hil Baki, a student of the university and an activist of the organization.
The victim is a postgraduate student of the university’s Islamic Studies Department and is also a member of the same student body led by Mamun.
Mamun, a former student of the same department, and the victim fell in love and were in a relationship since they first met back in July 2018, read the case statement.
“We (the victim and Mamun) used to talk on different social media platforms, such as Facebook Messenger, Imo, and WhatsApp, where evidence of him provoking me to be physically intimate can be found,” said the victim in the case statement. The victim claimed that she visited Mamun at his house in Old Dhaka’s Lalbagh area after he had asked her to do so on the day of the reported incident.
“With the false promise of marriage, he raped me at his house,” she mentioned in the case statement, which added that she was finally admitted at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with the help of Shohag, one of the six accused in the rape case, on January 12.
The victim, in the case statement, also said she tried to contact her friends who were working as DU correspondents at different Bangladeshi newspapers but Shohag obstructed her from doing so following Mamun’s instructions. “In the meantime, Mamun agreed to marry me as I kept insisting on it.”
“However, at one point he started ignoring me,” she further alleged in the case statement.
Later, Shohag called her to the Sadarghat area to solve the problem with Mamun. She went there and had breakfast in a restaurant with Shohag on February 9.
Shohag took her to Chandpur after tempting her with various things. Not seeing Mamun there, she became suspicious and told Shohag to return her to Dhaka immediately.
On their way back to the capital, she was raped by Shohag in the launch cabin.
When she cried, Shohag threatened to show her as a woman of bad character. He also said the people on the launch were his acquaintances. Shohag also told the victim not to inform Mamun about the matter. The launch reached the Sadarghat terminal around 8:40pm that day, the case statement mentioned.
Later on, the victim said she sought former Ducsu VP Nur’s help in settling the issue as Mamun and Nur were in the same organization. Nur and the victim met in Nilkhet on June 24, after Nur had assured the victim of settling the matter.
“Instead of settling the issue, he (Nur) told me not to go too far with the matter. He threatened that he would have things posted on social media platforms, labelling me as a prostitute with the help of his followers.”
“He said that he would circulate this in the Facebook group of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council, which has around 1.2 million members. He even told me that he would go live on Facebook to defame me,” the victim added in the case statement.
Shohag instructed Nazmul and Baki to bad-mouth her. Then they planned her character assassination in a messenger chat group.
The victim added that she was traumatized over the incident and had to take time to reveal the matter to her family for due action, which is why she filed the case so late.
On Sunday, the DU student filed a rape case against Nur and five others with Lalbagh police, according to Officer-in-Charge (OC) KM Ashraf Uddin.
All the accused are members and leaders of the Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council and are current and former students of Dhaka University. On Monday around 8:30pm Nur and the five other accused were detained by members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
They were questioned for attacking police and vandalizing a police vehicle near Matsya Bhaban – the Department of Fisheries building – in Kakrail, Dhaka, SM Shamim, assistant commissioner of the Ramna zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said.
Nur and the others were questioned for over an hour, and then they signed an undertaking before getting released from DB custody at around 12:45am on Tuesday.
