Amin jute mill workers clash with cops for arrears: 12 hurt

Workers of Amin Jute Mills Ltd clashed with the law enforcers in Bayazid area of the city on Tuesday during their demonstrations for arrears, leaving 12 people injured.
Witnesses said the jute mill workers took position on the Chittagong-Hathazari road in front of their factory around 10am demanding that their arrears be cleared. However, police dispersed them.
Later, the workers took to the street again and blocked the road putting burning tyres and tree logs.
The clash ensued when police charged baton on the agitating workers. A chase and counter-chase took place during the melee that left 12 people injured.
Workers alleged that all the victims were their colleagues who were injured in police action.
Sub-inspector of Bayazid Police Station Md Osman Gani said the vehicular movement on the road resumed after 2:30 pm.
Meanwhile, general secretary of Amin Jute Mills Workers’ Union Shamsul Alam said they sat in a meeting with the factory authorities in the afternoon when they assured the workers of clearing arrears before Eid-ul-Azha.
