The farmers have achieved an all-time record output of Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) rice exceeding the fixed production target by 18.53 per cent in Rangpur agriculture region this season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources, the farmers finally produced 16.59 lakh tonnes of T-Aman rice, higher by 2.59 lakh tonnes, than the fixed production target of 14 lakh tonnes in five districts under the region this time.
The DAE had fixed a target of producing over 14 lakh tonnes of T-Aman rice from over 5.21 lakh hectares of land this season in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts under the region.
However, the farmers finally cultivated the crop on 5.85 lakh hectares, higher by 64,039 hectares or 12.28 per cent than the fixed farming target even after recouping damage of Aman crop on 5,548 hectares by flash floods this year.
“The government distributed Aman seedlings worth Taka 7.64 lakh among the flood-hit farmers in the region to assist them in recouping the damage,” Mesbahul added.
Regional additional director of DAE Shah Alam said the farmers finally produced 16.59 lakh tonnes of Aman rice exceeding the fixed production target by 2.59 lakh tonnes of rice attaining an average yield of 2.83 tonnes clean rice per hectare this season.
Of the total, the farmers produced 1.02 lakh tonnes hybrid variety Aman rice from 29,689 hectares, 15.02 lakh tonnes high yielding variety rice from 5.24 lakh hectares and 54,631 tonnes local variety Aman rice from 31,313 hectares.
“The achieved Aman crop yield rates in terms of clean rice stand at 3.46 tonnes per hectare for hybrid variety, 2.86 tonnes for high yielding variety and 1.74 tonnes per hectare for the local variety Aman this season in the region,” Alam added.
Talking to BSS, farmers said that they achieved the super bumper production this season after completing harvest of T-Aman crop last week.
Farmers Musfikur Rahman of Basudebpur village in Dinajpur and Ariful Haque of Najirdigar village in Rangpur said that they were happy to sell just harvested T-Aman paddy at rates between Taka 770 and 820 per mound (every 40 kg) this season.
