Staff Reporter: Awami League mayoral candidates were unofficially declared elected in the Dhaka’s two city corporations.
North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) elections on Saturday.
In the DSCC, ruling party contestant Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh won with 424,595 votes, defeating BNP’s Ishraque Hossain, who got 236,512 and defeated by 188,083 votes.
DSCC’s Returning Officer Abdul Baten announced the results around 12:35am on Sunday. He said that voter turnout in the DSCC polls was 29 percent.
In the DNCC election, AL candidate Atiqul Islam won with 447,211 votes defeating BNP’s Tabith Awal, who got 264,161 and defeatedby 183,050 votes.
DNCC Returning Officer Abul Kashem announced the results around 2:45am on Sunday. He said the voter turnout was 25 percent.
On Saturday, voting in the capital’s two city corporations began at 8am and ended at 4pm amid ‘low voter turnout’. There were sporadic violence also reported. BNP allegeted that their agents were being driven out of polling stations.
Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda said he was happy with the overall atmosphere during the Dhaka city elections.
The BNP rejected the polls results on Saturday night alleged widespread irregularities and called day long strike in the capital on Sunday.
