AL man killed in factional clash

An Awami League activist was killed in a factional clash between two rival groups of the ruling party over establishing supremacy in Abdalpur village of Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as the AL activist Mainuddin Biswas, father of Islamic University Chhatra League unit general secretary Jewel Rana Halim.
Quoting locals, police said that there had been a long standing dispute between Abdalpur union AL general secretary Golam Mostafa and UP chairman Ali Haider.
Tense situation was prevailing in the area since the national election held on December 30, 2108 as the two groups were in loggerheads over a trifling matter centering vote.
Sequel to the enmity, several hundred supporter of Golam Mostafa equipped with locally made weapons whooped on the house of Ali Haider around 6:30 am that triggered a fierce clash in the village, leaving Mainuddin, critically injured. Later, the injured was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead. After the incident, SM Tanvir Arafat, superintendent of Kushtia Police visited the spot.
Additional policemen have been deployed in and around the village to avoid any further unwanted situation.
Meanwhile, the victim’s son Jewel claimed that his father was a supporter of Ali Haider. “So that, the rivals hacked my father to death,” he added.
