The leader was identified as SM Abu Hanif, general secretary of AL Mirpur Thana Unit. He was admitted to a nearby clinic for treatment.
Local sources said that Hanif came under attack of transport workers when he along with some of his followers went to Leguna stand at Mirpur -1 crossing near Ansar Camp at about 2:00pm for extortion.
Hanif allegedly extorts from the Leguna stand on regular basis. But yesterday he was locked in a quarrel with the transport workers when demanded extra money from them.
Not only that, Hanif and his supporters also beat some transport workers when they refused to pay extra bucks.
At one stage, the transport workers being organised conducted counter attack on the Awami League leader leaving him seriously injured. The followers of Hanif managed to escape the scene at that time dodging the transport workers.
Later, a team of Mirpur police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured AL leader from the wrath of general public.
When contacted, Officer-in Charge [Investigation] of Mirpur Police Station Md Shafiqur Rahman told The New Nation last night, “After getting information, we have sent a team of police to the spot. They are patrolling the area. The situation is under control.”
The OC refused to comment how a high profile ruling party leader was caught and beaten during extortion. “It is highly sensitive. I won’t comment,” he said.
A tense situation was prevailing in Mirpur area till the time of filing this report yesterday evening.
A huge number of transport workers were gathered there apparently to resist any possible attack of Hanif’s supporters.
