UNB, Beanibazar :
Rivals hacked a local Awami League leader to death allegedly in front of police over a land related dispute at
Alinagar village here on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Mahtab Uddin, 45, agriculture secretary of Alinagar union unit of the ruling party and son of Mokaddas Ali of Alinagar village. Police and locals said Mahtab had long been at loggerheads with Rubel and Sumon of the village over the ownership of a piece of land.
As a sequel of the enmity, Rubel and Sumon along with their followers and a team of police, including sub-inspector (SI) of Beanibazar Police Station Shah Alam, went to the disputed land around 11am on Wednesday to take control of it. As Mahtab tried to resist them, they hacked the Awami League leader brutally, leaving him dead on the spot. As the news spread around, agitated villagers besieged the houses of those involved in the killing. They also confined the policemen who were present during the incident to a house.
Contacted, Inspector (Investigation) of the police station said the police team went to the spot to investigate a complaint lodged against Mahtab and others. However, witnesses said the SI instigated the attack on Mahtab.
Officer-in-Charge of the police station Md Juber Ahmed said police have already arrested eight people from the spot in connection with the killing.
