SM Shafi (64) is a Joint General Secretary of Khagrachhari District Awami League. He is also a member of the Task Force on India returned tribal refugee rehabilitation and repatriation.
Currently, about 96% of his two kidneys have been damaged. The disease was diagnosed almost five years ago. But due to lack of money, he could not take proper treatment timely. As the situation deteriorated over time, he started taking treatment since two years ago.
In between, he went to Calcutta twice. Besides, he has taken treatment at PG Hospital (BSMMU), Chattogram Metropolitan Hospital and Parkview Hospital for a long time.
However, there was no improvement in the condition. Rather, his condition was more deteriorated. Moreover, SM Shafi became destitute to meet the medical expenses. At one stage he returned home with despair.
However, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken the responsibility of SM Shafi’s medical treatment after reading the news in the newspapers. In it, SM Shafi is dreaming to survive with a new hope.
According to family sources of SM Shafi, it was known, according to the direction of the Prime Minister, SM Shafi was admitted to the National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology Hospital on 28th April.
The medical board of three members is formed by heading Dr Zulfikar Ali Lallein, Associate Professor of Cardiology at heart-disease Institute.
The Prime Minister’s Special Assistant as well as Agriculturist Moshiur Rahman Humayun, Barrister Biplob Barua and Protocol Officer SM Khurshid-Ul-Alam were given full responsibility for the medical work.
SM Shafi was under intensive observation for 24 days at ‘National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology Hospital’.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has given Tk 5 lakh for the purchase of medicines.
According to Dr. Zulfikar Ali Lallein, Head of the formed Medical Board, the son of SM Shafi named engineer SM Nazim, said “To save my father, it is important to replace the kidney. However, due to high levels of diabetics, high blood pressure and not good of heart condition, doctors are not taking risk of kidney replacement. So, provisionally peritoneal dialysis is the only hope”.
Expressing gratitude to all concerned including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he also said, “If there arranged for better treatment in abroad, my father would be saved. And it is possible only by the prime minister’s sincerity and generosity”. “In the meantime, she has shown her generosity”, he added.
It is noted that SM Shafi’s politics started in the early of 70’s. At the beginning of politics, he was the President of Fatehpur Union Chhatra League in Hathazari Upazila of Chattogram.
After coming to Khagrachhari, he was involved with the politics of Awami League. In the circumambulation of political path, he was elected as Joint-General Secretary of the District Awami League. He is known as a clean politician in Khagrachhari. In addition, he has played an important role in performing the historic Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord. He was one of the volunteers of Chittagong Hill Tracts Communication Committee.
