Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque on Sunday said that the modernisation and commercialisation of the agriculture will show light to the farmers of the country.
Agriculture Minister was addressing a discussion organized by Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) to mark its 58th founding anniversary at Motijheel in the city on Sunday.
BADC Chairman M Sayedul Islam, Agriculture Secretary M Nasir Uddin, former Secretary Dr S M Nazmul Islam and lawmaker Abdul Mannan, among others, spoke at the event. Dr Abdur Razzaque said the present government is working for benefit of the farmers.
“We are taking initiatives for ensuring the fair price of agricultural products to improve living standard of farmers,” he added.
“Agriculture has never been a respectable profession. Times have changed, now agriculture has turned into an occupation of the elites. Many talented youths are now involved in farming after acquiring higher education from abroad,” said Razzaque.
“We have become self-sufficient in producing granular crops. Sometimes, we have surplus. Nobody has to face starvation. Now, the government is working to provide nutritious and safe food for people. It needs agricultural diversification, commercialisation, mechanisation and modernization,” said the Minister.
About the ongoing anti-corruption drives, the minister said, “Government has taken zero-tolerance policy against the corruption. So, all including BADC will have to be brought under accountability.”
