A process to build character

Abdul Muqit Chowdhury :All over the country there prevails the fragrance of fasting rituals – a pledge and process to build character to contribute for the welfare of the self, family, society, nation and mankind. It should be noted in this context that the holy Quran, the ‘Guide tomankind’ from Almighty Allah was revealed in the holy Lailatul Qadr during this month. The Quran and the Sunnah present universal Code of life for human emancipation and peace in the worldly life and salvation in the eternal life Hereafter. All the past Divine scriptures were revealed in this holy month. The Sahifa of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), the Zabur of Dawood (AS), the Tawrat of Hazrat Musa (AS) and the Inzil of Hazrat Isa (AS) were revealed in this month. Finally the holy Quran, the universal and eternal message of Allah, was revealed in this month : “Ramzan is the month in which was sent down the Quran, as a guide to mankind, also clear (signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong”. (Sura Baqara: 185) So, it is the most dignified period of the year for its Divine character, significance and contents. Fasting was a compulsory practice of the earlier Ummats. The month-long fasting has also been ordained for Ummat-e-Muhammadi. The holy Quran reveals : “O ye who believe! Fasting is preseribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you… ” (Sura Baqara: 183). The crescent moon has brought with it the golden periods of Rahmat (blessings), Maghfirat (forgiveness) and Nazaat (salvation) for Muslims. We most heartily welcome this solemn occasion by surrendering to the Will of Allah Rabbul Aalameen! The purpose of observing fasting, according to the Holy Quran, is ” …..that ye may (learn) self-restraint.” (2:183) “(He wants you) to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that. He has guided you ; and perchance ye shall be grateful.” (2:185)Thus, fasting offers us the opportunity to attain self-restraint. Restraint is a struggle against evil instincts and forces of misdeeds. It helps us to acquire human qualities and lead virtuous life for wellbeing-both for ourselves and the society. From the very sighting of the moon of the holy month of Ramzan, the Muslims undergo a very disciplined and punctual life observing fasting, offering Taraweeh and Tahazzud prayers, reciting the holy Quran, observing zikr and supplication, praying for the salvation of the departed souls, abstaining from vices – the bad deeds and practising virtues – goods deeds.
