Darkness, large gaps, slope without protection

The China-Bangladesh friendship bridge, publicly known as ‘Postogola bridge’, is becoming risky to the pedestrians because of its number of coverless joints on the pavement — the walking way for the passersby.
In some points, the joint-gaps have also been enlarged, which are so large that any child may fall down through it in the river. Not only that, pedestrians’ feet may also fall in traps at any time.
Its not the end. Dozens of light posts of the bridge are standing along without any bulb for a long time. So, darkness is a common scenario in the area which causes severe difficulties to the pedestrians, walking through the pavement.
Thousands of pedestrians cross the bridge day and night time every day. But the authorities concerned do not show any interest to pay attention to this for the reasons best known to them.
Apart from this, there are serious slopes in the both approach points of the bridge where there is no railing to protect the pedestrians and vehicles.
“We use the pavement of the bridge every morning and night with huge risk because of dangerous coverless gaps between span joints. On the other hand there is not enough light in the area as light posts are holding fused bulbs,” said, Abul Khair, a businessman of Jurain, who resides in Hasnabad, the other side of the bridge.
He said that thousands of people from different walks of life use the pavement of the bridge to cross the Buriganga river every day.
“A number of people frequently become victims of the coverless joint-gaps of the pavements. Many of them even had to take admission to the hospitals. But who cares?” said, Sumon Mian, a ground nut seller on the bridge.
The dangerous slope in the Jurain end of the bridge also poses life risk not only to pedestrians but also to the vehicles.
“It is high risk not only for the pedestrians but also for the vehicles those use the Jurian entering point of the bridge. Because there are no railings in the slope,” said Sabuj, a Taxi driver on the bridge.
“In this situation when taxies and other vehicles try to avoid traffic jams drive through the edge line near the slope taking risk on the lives of passengers and drivers,” said bus driver, waiting to curb the traffic grid lock on the bridge.
