Around eight hundred flood affected Indian citizens took shelter in several villages of Mogolhat union in Sadar upazila and Durgapur union of Aditmari upazila on Monday night.
Sources at Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said that the Indian people of two villages adjacent to Bangladesh border were severely affected by floodwaters. Considering humanitarian ground, they permitted the Indian citizens to cross Bangladesh border for taking shelter here.
The Indian flood-affected victims, who took shelter in Bangladesh, said that they would have been washed away by the floodwaters if BGB men would not help them.
They are now staying at the houses, open space and on the roods in two unions of the upazilas.
Habibur Rahman, chairman of Mogolhat union, said local people informed me that BGB members were obstructing the Indian citizens from intruding in Bangladesh. Later, he requested Lt Col Golam Morshed, commanding officer of Lalmonirhat BGB-15 battalion, to consider the case on humanitarian ground. Later, the BGB official gave them permission to enter into Bangladesh.
“Some 700-800 Indian people took shelter in Bangladesh after being affected by massive floods,” said Lt Col Golam Morshed.
