7 killed in separate incidents

Staff Reporter :At least seven persons, including two activists of Jubo League, were killed in gunshots, mob attacks and stabbing in Khulna, Gazipur, Dhaka, Magura and Bogra districts on Saturday.In Khulna, at least two activists of local Jubo League were shot dead by miscreants in New Market area of the city in the early hours of the day.The victims were identified as Shaon, Joint Secretary, Ward No. 14 of the city unit, and Sayed, an activist of the party, police said.Maruf Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonadanga Police Station said that a gang of miscreants opened fire on them when they were gathering in the area around 10:30pm, leaving them critically injured. They were admitted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital and succumbed to their injuries there around 12:30am.The bodies were handed over to the relatives after autopsy, the police official said. A case was filed in this connection, the OC said.In Gazipur, a housewife was hacked to death by unidentified miscreants in Bhaoraid area under Sadar upazila early in the morning.Her husband and daughter were also injured in the attack. They were admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).The deceased was identified as Khorsheda Begum, 48, wife of Anwar Hossain. The body was sent to the Sadar hospital morgue for an autopsy, police said. Joydebpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Sujayet Hossain said that miscreants entered the house and stabbed them while they were sleeping around 12:45am.”Then the miscreants locked the door and fled the scene,” he said. Hearing their groans, neighbours unlocked the room and found Khorsheda dead and two others injured, the SI said. At Savar, two suspected robbers were killed in a mob attack at Hindu Bhakurta village in Savar upazila, on the outskirts of the capital city Dhaka, early in the morning.The identities of the victims could not be known immediately, police said.Savar Police Station SI Anwarul said, a gang of robbers attacked on the house of Sunil around 3:45am and looted valuables inmates at gunpoint. At one stage, the robbers stabbed Sunil as he tried to resist them.Hearing cry for help, local people rushed in and caught two robbers but the others managed to flee the scene. The villagers then clubbed them, leaving them dead on the spot, the SI said.Police recovered the bodies and sent these to local hospital morgue, he added.In Magura, a suspected robber was killed during a ‘gunfight’ with police at Mugirdal area on the Magura-Jessore Road in Sadar upazila early in the morning.The victim was identified as Rafiqul Islam, 40, hailing from Satkhira district, police said.Sadar Police Station OC Munshi Asaduzzaman said that a team of law enforcers conducted a drive in the area around 2:30am when a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery.As the team reached the spot, the robbers opened fire to police, prompting the law enforcers to fire back that triggered a gunfight.”Of them, Rafiqul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while the others managed to flee,” the OC said.Four police constables also sustained bullet injuries during the incident, the police official said.Police recovered a rifle, two bullets, five crude bombs and some sharp weapons from the spot, he said.In Bogra, a bullet-hit unknown body was recovered from the Dhaka-Rangpur highway near Food Village restaurant under Sherpur upazila in the district.Ataur Rahman, ASI of the thana said that a team of police was patrolling in the area and they found the body in the morning. Several injury marks were seen in the body, the ASI said.The body had been sent to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital morgue for an autopsy, the ASI added.
