Over 60% of Dhaka’s Covid patients have been infected with the deadly Delta variant, also known as the Indian variant, according to a recent study by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b).
The study, conducted from the last week of May till the first week of June, analyzed the genomic sequence of 60 samples from the Covid-19 patients of the capital and found that 68% matched the Delta variant of Covid-19, told icddr,b Senior Manager (communications) AKM Tariful Islam Khan told the media. According to the icddr,b findings, some 22% of the other samples tested were of the South Africa variant, a couple of the Nigerian variant while the rest of the samples matched with the Wuhan variant.
Findings from several researches and genome sequencings done recently indicate that the recent spike of Covid cases and deaths in the country’s bordering districts has been triggered by Delta variant.
However, it is the South African variant that is responsible for coronavirus upsurge in Chittagong, the findings reported.
