6 killed in Bandarban landslide

Landslide triggered by torrential rains left at least six persons dead in Lama upazila of Bandarban district on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Amena Begum, 30, Rozina Begum, 30, Sagar, 14, Arafat Hossain, 14, Bashir Ahmed, 55 and Saddam Hossain, 5. The injured were taken to the Lama Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
 “The incident took place in the area when a portion of a hill fell on their houses at the foot of the hill around 2.10am near Lama Hospital area,” Mohammad Sirajul Sagar and Amena of another family.
Talking to The New Nation on Saturday Additional Commissioner Abu Zafor said that the fire fighters rushed to the hilly area and recovered the dead bodies.
 “The body of Arafat was retrieved from the soil around 11am and that of Bashir around 3pm. The injured persons were admitted to the hospitals,” he said.
He added that ignoring the local administration’s warning of catastrophe, the people had been living there.
 “We have already started evacuating the people from the hill side area,” he said, adding that the Bangladesh Army and the Ansar members also joined the rescue operation.
In 2012, about 35 people were killed in a landslide in the same area.
