55 -metre flood control dyke collapses in Sirajganj

A portion of the flood control embankment at Bhatpara in Koizuri union of Shahzadpur Upazila under Sirajganj district collapsed into Jamuna River early yesterday.
” At least 55- metre area of the embankment suddenly collapsed as the bags and CC block of the right side protection embankment of the Jamuna got displaced at about 1:00 am on Monday due to the pressure of river water at Kozipuri point” said Md Saiful Islam, Chairman of Kozipuri Union Parishad.
” Poor work on the protection embankment causes the damage. The embankment weakened as the bags CC blocks were not used properly, he added.
 When contacted, Md Kabibur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Bera Division of Water Development of Board (WDB), claimed that there was no fault in the embankment construction.
” A small area of the embankment eroded due to the pressure of water. This is nothing serious. The WDB experts visited the sport in the morning. We will necessary step to repair the embankment soon,he said
The WDB constructed a 1-2 kilometer protection embankment on the bank of the river at a cost of TK 110 crore in 2011.
Locals blamed poor monitoring by the WDB for the damage of the newly built embankment.
