52 fishermen held with huge Jatka, current nets in Bhola, Shariatpur

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in separate drives detained 43 fishermen along with 25 mounds of Jatka and 60,000 meters of current nets from Meghna river on Tuesday night.
Bhola Coast Guard sources said, Coast Guard members with the help of fisheries department conducted a drive in Padma River at Razapur village in the district headquarters and seized a trawler along with 25 mounds of Jatka.
In another drive, Coast Guard members in association with fisheries department members of Doulatkhan detained 28 fishermen along with 3,0000 meters of current nets.
Laxmipur Coast Guard sources said, Coast Guard members and fisheries department of the district headquarter conducted several drives in different points of the Meghna river and arrested 15 fishermen along with 30,000 meters of current nets and seized seven engine-run boats.
The seized fishes were distributed to the poor and orphans of the respective areas and fishing nets were damaged.
UNB from Shariatpur adds: A mobile court here has sentenced nine fishermen to one-month imprisonment and fined two others for netting fish in the Padma River defying a government ban.
The 11 fishermen were detained during a two-hour drive conducted by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Bhedarganj Sabbir Ahmed in the river at Kachikata from 10am on Tuesday.
The detainees are Md Fakhrul Islam, 35, Al Amin Bhuiyan, 25, Ahsanullah, 45, Shah Jalal, 30, Jasim Hossain, 32, Shahed, 25, Borhan Uddin, 32, Manik, 25, Rashid Bepari, 32, Altab Bepari, 72, and Rajib, 18.
The mobile court also seized 10,000 metres of current net and a fishing boat. Later, the UNO sentenced nine of them to one-month imprisonment and fined two others Tk 5,000 each. The seized net was also burned down.
The government imposed a two-month ban on netting fish from Sureswar in Naria Upazila to Gosairhat of the Padma River from March 1 to April 30.
