State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Friday said some 5 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of gas added to the national grid from No. 9 well of Haripur gas field in Sylhet, reports BSS.
“The gas was supplied to the GTCL pipeline from today (Friday)”, he said this while inaugurating a 20-inch 20-kilometer pipeline from Pangaon Valve Station of Titas to BSIC Industrial City at Keraniganj as the chief guest.
The state minister said currently 2900-3000 mmcfd gas is being supplied against the daily demand for 3400 mmcfd gas from domestic wells and imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
“Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the government has undertaken various initiatives to ensure energy security in the country and make Bangladesh a developed one by 2041,” he said.
According to the ministry information, the gas level was found at a depth of 1898 meters through work over the old well. Gas further can be extracted from three more levels in this well.
The work over the well was done from October 1 last year to January 1 this year, it said, and added that around 170 billion cubic feet of gas was reserved in this gas field.
Nasrul Hamid added that the government has undertaken the project to install a 20 km pipeline from Titas’s Pangaon Valve Station to BSIC Industrial City at Keraniganj and adjacent area of Ruhitpur.
“Pipeline Engineers Association Ltd is responsible to install the pipeline as a contractor. Presently, gas is supplied to the industrial, commercial and residential sectors at Jinjira and Keraniganj areas through a six-inch gas line from Pangaon Valve Station,” he said.
The state minister said many industrial establishments at Keraniganj are facing pressure crisis of gas due to due to narrow gas pipeline.
He said over 125 different types of factories were set up in the BSIC industrial city, most of which are gas run factories, adding, “But most of these factories are facing gas crisis due to lack of connections to ensure gas supply, the government took the initiative.”
Keraniganj Upazila and Jinjira areas have scope to set up different types of industries including dyeing factories and washing plants, as gas will be ensured for those factories, Nasrul Hamid said.
Senior Secretary of Energy and Mineral Resources Division Md Anisur Rahman said the 20-inch pipeline would be completed in the next two months.
“After completion of the pipeline, 100 million cubic feet of gas will be supplied through this pipeline, which is two and a half times more than now,” he said.
Anisur Rahman said, “With installation of the new pipeline, at least 1,000 industrial establishments will be set up in the industrial areas under BSIC in future.”
Later, Nasrul Hamid joined a public meeting as the chief guest and delivered his speech.
Joint Convener of Keraniganj Upazila Awami League M E Mamun conducted the meeting, presided over by convener and Upazila chairman Shaheen Ahmed.
Among others, Managing Director of Titas Ali Iqbal Nurullah and Managing Director of PEAL Risal Mahmood spoke on the occasion.
