No cyclone shelter in 4 UZs in Khulna: 5 lakh coastal people at risk

It is well known that Khulna’s coastal areas are disaster prone. Different natural disasters like Aila, Sidr and Mahsen hit the coastal areas of Khulna leaving trail of devastations to life and property .
 Four upazilas out of nine of Khulna have no cyclone shelter. The four upazilas are Digholia, Phultala, Rupsha and Terokhada. As a result around 5 Lacs people of these Upzzilas are in risk of natural disaster.
Downpour has already begun in Khulna. Cyclone may attack at any moment like Aila, Sidr and Mahsen any Kind of new cyclone may destroy lives and other Valuable things including crops, cattle and houses of the people of coastal areas of Khulna.
12 cyclone shelters of Dakop and Koyra Upazila are in dilapidated condition. These cyclone shelters were built in the decade of 90 but these are in such a miserable condition that people may face in danger as these were not repaired still.
Rescue and rehabilitation centre of Khulna district administration sources said, out of 9 in Khulna. Among 17 at Batiaghata, 8 at Dumuria, 27 at Paikgachha, 57 at Dakop and 48 cyclone shelters are at Koyra Upazila.
Besides, two more cyclone Shelters are under construction in Dakop and koyra Upazila.
Due to having adjacent to coastal areas, cyclone shelters are much more in Dakop and Koyra Upazilas. The Lives risk of the people of the said two Upazilas are more than others.
No repairing works were done after building the cyclone shelters. Besides, the cyclone shelters are not sufficient for the 25 lakh people of the district. As such the people would not take shelters at cyclone shelters even after getting warning of cyclone. There is apprehension for losing lives and livelihoods of coastal people of Khulna.
In 2007 during Sidr, in 2009 during Aila and in 2013 during Mohsen, in 2016 Roanu, people rushed to the cyclone shelters. But at present 161 cyclone shelters. But at present 161 cyclone shelters can provide only 3 lakh people out of 25 lakh.
Bijoy Sarkar , Up Chairman of Moheswaripur Union of Koyra said, Koyra inhabitants are the worst victims during any natural disaster. More cyclone shelters are necessary for the upazila and the existing shelters should repair immediately, he added.
GM Ashraf , UP Chairman of Suterkhali Uninon of Dakop Upazila said, we informed several times to LGED for repairing the cyclone shelters, but they didn’t pay any heed to it. Cyclone shelters are not sufficient here, he added.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Khulna Nazmul Ahsan said, recently 14 new cyclone shelters were built. He said adding that more cyclone shelters would be built gradually particularly at place where no cyclone shelter was established.
On March 27, 2014. The national Disaster Preparedness Day was observed across the country with view to raising awareness among people about natural calamities.
The Ministry of Disaster management and Relief and non government organizations observed various programmes to mark the day with the theme ‘Disaster no timetable’, we’ll remain prepared all the time’.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a message said her government is always today to build a safe and disaster resilient nation through implementing disaster risk reduction production programs.
Khulna people hope that the prime Minister would give her kind attention to the coastal areas of Khulna which are disaster prone and at present lives and livelihoods of the people of this region are in great risk.
