Members of RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) in a drive arrested five people along with 12.5 kg gold and a private car from Khilgaon area of the city on Sunday morning.
The arrested people were identified as Sayed Mahmud alias Hasan Javed, 37, Md Forkan, 27, Meherunnesa, 45, Bibi Fatema and driver Shamsul Alam, 44.
Sources at the RAB-3 battalion headquarters said a team of the battalion was positioned in front of Rampura TV Bhaban near Rampura bridge at about 11:20 pm on Saturday night based on secret information that a gold consignment, kept inside a private car, was going to cross the area.
When the suspected private car was crossing the area, the anti-crime force started following the car from 1:30 am. Later, the Rab-3 members intercepted the suspected private car with assistance of a police patrol team of Khilgaon thana police in front of Khidma Hospital.
Searching the car, the elite force members recovered 108 gold bars weighing around 12.50 kg worth arount Tk 6.25 crore from the arrested people’s possessions.
During preliminary interrogation, Javed, Forkan, Meherunnesa, and Bibi Fatema revealed that they boarded a flight of Bangladesh Biman Airlines from Chittagong on Saturday night as domestic
passengers, as it was en route to Dhaka from Muscat via Chittagong. The aircraft landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at about 12:15 am on Saturday night.
After the flight took off from Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport, one international smuggling syndicate member handed over the gold consignment to the four people, who kept them hidden attached to their bodies. As the security checking system is mostly relaxed in the domestic terminal, the gold smuggling syndicate members easily came out from the domestic airport and got into the private car, and were heading towards Bangshal from the airport.
